Points of Distinction

  • Currently releasing some of the best Ruché-based wines highly regarded by wine press and connoisseurs

Giuseppe Cavallero began his wine entrepreneur activity in the early 60’s. In the '70s the sale of wine in carboys began; towards the end of the decade, the parish priest of Castagnole Monferrato became famous for his wine, the Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato. In 1980 Giuseppe Cavallero planted his first acre Ruché in Scurzolengo and built the current winery. Later towards the beginning of the years '90 the two brothers Claudio and Franco Cavallero took the reins of the company and founded the winery Cantine Sant'Agata.

The Cavallero Family

The beginnings and development of the Cavallero family enterprise have been marked by many interesting twists of fate and fortuitous events. Giuseppe Cavallero began his career as a winemaker by bottling his first vintage in the family’s living room, the largest room of the house. An asthma sufferer, Giuseppe traded these first bottles to a health spa in exchange for curative treatments. These were the sixties, so the years of tumultuous world events provided the background for Giuseppe’s first passionate forays into the world of wine. They were also the years of the births of his sons: Claudio in 1964, and Franco in 1968, who have since contributed their own dynamism to the family enterprise. In the 1970s, Giuseppe met a number of workmen engaged in apartment building construction in Liguria; they were enthusiastic wine consumers and asked if they might buy their supply directly from him. Thus, Giuseppe began selling demijohns of wine directly to his customers and inaugurated a very successful period for the family business.

By the late 1970s, the Cavallero’s had a famous winemaking neighbor, the parish priest of Castagnole Monferrato, Don Giacomo Cauda. In 1980, Giuseppe responded by uprooting a hectare of Barbera vines and replacing them with the priest’s renowned variety. Thus, the first hectare of Ruchè began to grow at Scurzolengo. In the early 1990s, the two Cavallero brothers finished their academic studies and began to take control of their father’s enterprise. In 1992, Claudio and Franco founded the Cantine Sant’Agata, named after a small votive marker in front of the property. The religious marker was placed there by a wealthy local family in thanks for a divinely-answered prayer. The two brothers divided up the responsibilities; Claudio became a talented winemaker and Franco developed a passionate approach to marketing and sales.

The fruits of their labors can be seen in the abundant selection of wines, especially in the team of Ruché wines led by the highly complex and structured Pro Nobis. They have also been the creators of innovative packaging, such as the 9.99, which utilizes a glass cork, and the back labels which supply nutritional information for the consumer.
