One of the most fascinating aspects of the wine Shardana is the fact that most of its vineyards (about 85% Carignano, 15% Shiraz) are located close to the sea. Some plants are more than 100 years old and many of them are rare examples dating back to the pre-Phylloxera period. It seems that these vines were sheltered from the dangerous insect which attacks the roots of European vines because the plants strike root into mainly sandy soils and windswept land.

The reasons seem to be two. First, the sea wind makes it difficult for the Phylloxera insects to lay their eggs; secondly, if they are able to attack the roots, producing small holes in the roots, these cavities are immediately "filled" with the sand of the sea, which somehow heals the wounds of the vine, thus allowing it to survive. This curious circumstance together with the high quality of the winemaking processes at the Cantina di Santadi makes Shardana a unique blending of Carignano and Sirah, a wine that is also aged in barrels for one year.
